Synopsis of Functional English Curriculum:
The following aspects form the core of our curriculum:-
It is the language teachers and pupils used during lessons. Examples of classroom language include the following: instructions, requests, praises, command, taking leave, greeting, expressing thanks, apologizing, interrupting in speech, suggesting, persuading, valediction and answering yes/no question.
2.Alphabet and vocabulary
Acquiring alphabet and vocabulary lay the foundation for learning English in the subsequent years. Not only is the alphabet confined to upper and lower case letters, but also cursive writing. Vocabulary teaching aims to equip pupils with a broad spectrum of domains. It covers an extensive area of topics. Examples of topic include the following: food, fruit, eating utensils, drink, body, clothing, colour, vehicle, animal, occupation, furniture, household appliance, community, hobby and nursery rhyme.
It ranges from English found in daily interpersonal communication to English found in signs, menu and name of MTR station. The aim is to expose our pupils to the authentic and genuine English that is commonly found in our daily life.
Language in use:
Creating an English language environment in the classroom is very important. Teachers are well-informed of the need to use English as a medium of instruction. In the teaching of English as a second language, there must be opportunities for pupils to be exposed to and to explore the language in use. Hence, English is expected to be insisted upon at all times in the classroom.
